Types of Leather
Leather has an inherent simplicity. It is one of the oldest clothing materials used by humans and has always been loved by people. Leather clothing is playing an increasingly important role in fashion trends. Leather, with its inherent toughness and sharpness, has become synonymous with urban modernity. In addition to long leather pants, leather shorts, leather skirts, and even leather dresses have become fashionable hot items this summer, and leather items are frequently seen on the streets and red carpets. This fabric is not only full of wildness, but its good elasticity also makes the clothes made from it more comfortable to wear. Leather has always been a favorite of fashionistas, from the most common cowhide and sheepskin to rare leathers such as crocodile, ostrich, and lizard skin. The unique texture of leather conveys a unique temperament and is a symbol of identity and taste.
Leather is animal skin that has been dehaired and tanned through physical and chemical processing, making it denatured and less prone to decay. Leather is composed of natural protein fibers tightly woven in three-dimensional space. Its surface has a special grain layer with natural grain and luster, and it feels comfortable to the touch.
According to use, it can be divided into: Leather for daily use, leather for national defense, leather for industry and agriculture, and leather for cultural and sports goods;
According to tanning methods, it is divided into chrome-tanned leather, vegetable-tanned leather, oil-tanned leather, aldehyde-tanned leather, and combination-tanned leather. In addition, it can be divided into light leather and heavy leather. Leather generally used for shoe uppers, clothing, and gloves is called light leather and is measured by area; leather made from thicker animal hides using vegetable tanning agents or combination tanning, used for the inner and outer soles of leather shoes and industrial accessories, is called heavy leather and is measured by weight.
According to animal species: Mainly pigskin, cowhide, sheepskin, horsehide, donkey hide, and kangaroo leather, as well as a small amount of fish leather, reptile leather, amphibian leather, and ostrich leather. Cowhide is further divided into yellow cattle hide, water buffalo hide, yak hide, and hybrid cattle hide; sheepskin is divided into sheepskin and goatskin.
According to layers: There are top-grain leather and second-layer leather. Top-grain leather includes full-grain leather and corrected-grain leather; second-layer leather includes pig second-layer leather and cow second-layer leather. Among the main types of leather, yellow cattle hide and sheepskin have a smooth and fine surface, small pores, and a dense and compact internal structure. The leather body has good fullness and elasticity, and good physical properties. Therefore, high-quality yellow cattle hide and sheepskin are generally used as materials for high-end products, and their prices are among the highest among bulk leathers.
